Meal Planning With GPT: How I Created a Weekly Menu in Minutes

Meal planning has always been one of those “I’ll get to it later” tasks for me. I knew it could save time, cut grocery costs, and make my week run smoother, yet every Sunday, I’d find myself opening the fridge, staring at random ingredients, and wondering what to cook.
The result? Too many last-minute takeout orders, rushed supermarket trips, and the same three meals on repeat.
Then, I discovered that GPT can plan my weekly menu in minutes. It was like hiring a personal meal planner who knew my tastes, my schedule, and my budget and who never complained about making changes.

Here’s how I now go from “I have no idea what’s for dinner” to a complete seven-day menu in less time than it takes to boil pasta.
Step 1: Giving GPT the Right Information
The secret to a great meal plan isn’t just asking for recipes. It’s giving GPT enough context to work with. I start by telling it exactly what I want, what I don’t like, and how I live.
Prompt example:
“Create a 7-day dinner plan for two adults. Meals should be healthy, take less than 30 minutes to prepare, include chicken, fish, and vegetarian options, but no beef or pork. Use simple supermarket ingredients and keep recipes under 10 ingredients each.”
Within seconds, GPT hands me a menu that fits my week perfectly. No extra thinking required.
Step 2: Ensuring Variety and Balance
Repetition is one of my biggest cooking ruts. To avoid eating chicken four nights in a row, I give GPT a variety rule.
Follow-up prompt:
“Make sure no main ingredient is repeated more than twice in the week. Include at least two vegetarian dinners.”
The updated plan not only feels fresh but also makes my grocery list more diverse and my meals more exciting.
Step 3: Getting the Grocery List Done for Me
This is where GPT really shines. After finalizing the menu, I asked it to create a complete grocery list.
Prompt example:
“Generate a categorized grocery list for this plan, divided into produce, dairy, pantry, protein, and spices.”
I can take this straight to the supermarket or copy it into my online grocery app. The thinking is done, the list is ready, and I’m already ahead of schedule.
Step 4: Adapting for Real Life
Some nights I have time to cook; others, I need something quick or make-ahead. GPT lets me build those needs right into the plan.
Prompt example:
“On Wednesday, I need a meal I can prep in advance and reheat. On Friday, make it a bigger meal so I have leftovers for Saturday lunch.”
In seconds, it adjusts the menu without disrupting the rest of the plan.
Step 5: Adding Recipes and Instructions
When I want everything in one place, I ask GPT for detailed recipes.
Prompt example:
“Provide recipes for each dinner in this plan, including exact ingredient amounts, clear step-by-step instructions, and estimated cooking times.”
It becomes a full, ready-to-use cooking guide for the week.
Step 6: Saving and Reusing for the Future
The beauty of using GPT for meal planning is that I can save my best prompts and tweak them for future weeks. Sometimes, I focus on budget-friendly meals; other times, I’ll ask for a themed plan, such as “Mediterranean” or “comfort food.”
Why This Changed My Routine
Before GPT, meal planning was another decision-heavy task I’d avoid until the last minute. Now it’s quick, flexible, and even a little fun.
I save money by shopping with a plan, waste less food, and avoid the 6 p.m. scramble to figure out dinner. Most importantly, I feel less stressed about cooking because I know exactly what’s coming and I have everything I need to make it happen.
