Letting GPT Help Me Negotiate a Deal — Did It Work?

Negotiating a deal can be stressful. You want to get the best outcome without damaging the relationship, and you need to balance confidence with professionalism. Normally, I would prepare by writing notes and practicing what to say. This time, I decided to do something different. I let GPT guide me through the entire process of negotiation.

Here is what happened, what worked, and where I still had to step in.

Step 1: Preparing My Strategy

I began by telling GPT the basics of the deal. I shared the type of partnership, what I wanted from it, and what the other side was likely looking for. Then I asked:

“If you were my negotiation coach, how should I prepare for this meeting? Outline my goals, possible objections, and strategies for finding win-win solutions.”

GPT gave me a structured game plan: my top three objectives, the points where I could compromise, and a list of potential objections I might hear. This alone saved me hours of thinking and scribbling notes.

Step 2: Practicing the Conversation

Next, I asked GPT to role-play as the other side.

“Act as the person I am negotiating with. Push back on my requests, ask hard questions, and make counteroffers.”

This practice round was incredibly valuable. GPT challenged me with objections like pricing, timeline, and risk. Each time, I could test my response, then ask GPT how to improve it. By the time I walked into the real negotiation, I had already faced most of the tough questions.

Step 3: Using GPT to Rewrite My Proposals

I drafted a few key sentences for my pitch and asked GPT to rewrite them in different tones: firm, collaborative, and persuasive. This gave me flexible language I could adapt in the moment, depending on how the conversation unfolded. It felt like having a communications coach by my side.

Step 4: The Actual Negotiation

When the meeting began, I felt more confident than usual. I used the phrasing GPT had suggested and leaned on the strategies from our practice. The other party pushed back, but I stayed calm because I had already rehearsed similar objections.

By the end, we reached an agreement that was better than my fallback position. I did not get everything I wanted, but I walked away with a fair deal and a stronger relationship.

What Worked and What Did Not

What worked well

  • GPT helped me prepare faster than usual.

  • The role-play made me feel ready for objections.

  • The rewritten sentences improved my tone and clarity.

What I still had to do myself

  • Reading the other person’s emotions in real time.

  • Deciding when to push harder or let go.

  • Building trust, which only comes from human connection.

GPT gave me the structure and confidence, but the human side of negotiation was still up to me.

Would I Do It Again?

Absolutely. Letting GPT act as my negotiation coach saved me time, sharpened my strategy, and gave me the language I needed to succeed. While it cannot replace human intuition, it is the best preparation tool I have found so far.
