How GPT Helps Me Explain Tricky Topics to My Students

As a teacher, I know that not every topic clicks the first time a student hears it. Some ideas are naturally complex, while others seem simple but can be surprisingly hard to grasp. I’ve tried many different ways to explain tricky concepts, diagrams, examples, and analogies, but sometimes, I still see that “lost” look in a student’s eyes.

That’s when I started using GPT as part of my teaching toolkit.

It doesn’t replace me as the teacher. Instead, it acts like an always-available teaching assistant that helps me find fresh ways to explain, rephrase, and break things down until the light bulb goes on.

Here’s exactly how I use GPT to make learning clearer, easier, and more engaging for my students.

1. Breaking Down Complex Ideas Into Simple Language

When a concept is loaded with technical terms or abstract theories, GPT helps me strip it down to the essentials.

Example Prompt:

“Explain the concept of photosynthesis to a 10-year-old using simple words and examples.”

GPT will rewrite the concept without jargon and often use relatable comparisons like how plants make their own “food” using sunlight, similar to how we cook with ingredients.

2. Offering Multiple Explanations for Different Learning Styles

Students learn in different ways  some prefer visual examples, others like step-by-step breakdowns, and some respond best to stories.

Example Prompt:

“Explain gravity using three different approaches: a real-life example, a simple analogy, and a short scientific definition.”

Now I can choose the explanation that works best for a particular student  or share all three so they can pick what resonates.

3. Creating Analogies That Stick

Sometimes a well-chosen analogy is all it takes for a concept to click. GPT is great at brainstorming creative comparisons I wouldn’t have thought of on my own.

Example Prompt:

“Give me 5 analogies for how the internet works, suitable for teenagers.”

I get fresh, relatable comparisons (like how the internet is a huge library where every book is linked to every other book), which helps students see familiar patterns in new ideas.

4. Translating Between Difficulty Levels

When I teach advanced students, I can start with complex explanations and then “translate” them for beginners.

Example Prompt:

“Rewrite this explanation of quantum mechanics for a student who has never studied physics.”

GPT helps me create a tiered learning approach same concept, but adjusted for different levels of understanding.

5. Answering “Off-the-Cuff” Student Questions

We all know those unexpected questions that pop up mid-lesson. Sometimes they’re outside the immediate scope of what we’re covering. GPT helps me prepare ahead of time by generating possible student questions and concise, clear answers.

Example Prompt:

“List 10 common student questions about the water cycle and give short, clear answers.”

This makes me more prepared, and students feel confident that their curiosity is welcome.

6. Providing Step-by-Step Explanations

Some students get lost because they missed a single step along the way. GPT is excellent for breaking a process into small, digestible pieces.

Example Prompt:

“Explain how to solve a quadratic equation in 7 short steps.”

I can print or display the list so students can follow along at their own pace.

7. Supporting Bilingual and ESL Students

For students learning in a second language, GPT can simplify or translate explanations without losing meaning.

Example Prompt:

“Explain the law of supply and demand in simple English for ESL learners.”

It helps me make lessons inclusive and ensures no one is left behind due to language barriers.

Final Thoughts: GPT as a Teacher’s Partner

Using GPT in the classroom isn’t about replacing human interaction; it’s about enhancing it. It gives me new ways to explain, saves me time, and helps students see the same idea from different angles until it finally clicks.

The result? More “aha” moments, fewer frustrated faces, and a classroom where tricky topics feel less intimidating.
